IPMA kent 4 levels A:B:C:D, het entry level is IPMA-D.Instroom kan op elke level, echter level IPMA D is het enige level waarbij er géén eigen afgerond project wordt bekeken in een assessment. De toetsing is sec een theoretisch examen om het certificaat IPMA-D te kunnen verkrijgen.
IPMA hanteert een NCB4 ( Nederlandse competence baseline) als uitgangspunt waarmee de deelnemer kennis krijgt over project management technieken, -tools en -processen. Ingegaan wordt op projectfasering projectplanning, besturen van een project, hoe kwaliteit te bewaken binnen een project, financiering en budgettering.
